Banta is a small unincorporated community sitting right on the Johnson and Morgan county line, southwest of Greenwood. It has been there a long time: it was called Dresslarsville before it was renamed for David Demaree Banta, a Johnson County judge and historian, and it had its own post office from 1883 until 1904.
Today it is rural. Properties out here are measured in acres rather than in feet of frontage, and the work is different because of it. Less trimming around foundation beds, far more open mowing, fence line, and ditch bank.
Rural properties are a different job
On an acreage property the mowing itself is the straightforward part. What takes the time is everything at the edges: fence rows, ditch banks, the tree line at the back, and around outbuildings, gates, and culverts. Those are the places that go from tidy to overgrown in about two seasons if nobody stays on them.
Open exposure is the other factor. There is no neighboring house or mature canopy breaking the wind or the afternoon sun out here, so these lawns dry out faster and go dormant earlier in summer than a sheltered lot in town would.
Brush is the recurring job in this part of the county. Where a mowed area meets a tree line or a fence, bush honeysuckle moves in and takes ground steadily. Left alone for a few years it forms a solid wall, and getting that back is a real project rather than an afternoon.
